Abstract: A decline of butternut has been noted in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, and Illinois for the past several years. The causes are being investigated and we need additional information on the occurrence of the problem. We also need to know if the problem is found on walnut. Symptoms of decline include trunk and branch cankers with subsequent dieback of the crown. Decline affected trees do not recover, but will eventually die after several years of progressive crown deterioration.
