The New York State Department of Agriculture sponsored a Sirex training and survey workshop in August of 2005 in Oswego, NY, one area where signs of Sirex have been found.. After listening to speakers and presentations on the biology and history of the Sirex Noctilio woodwasp, attendees went out in the field and got a first-hand look at tree damage and the insect itself.

As adults emerge, they chew round exit holes that vary from 1/8 to 3/8 inch in diameter.   Workshop participants used binoculars to survey trees in the Sirex quarantine area for signs of the insect.

This Cross Vane Sticky Trap is on of several types of traps used to detect the presence of Sirex Noctilio adults.   The insects in this specimen tube, held aloft by Dr. Richard Hoebeke of Cornell Department of Entomology, were captured by a participant in the survey workshop. Dr. Hoebeke told the group that the specimens were most likely Sirex Noctilio.
