•  Asian Longhorned Beetle: ALB probably travelled to the United States inside solid wood pac

king material from China. The beetle has been intercepted at ports and found in warehouses throughout the United States.

 Bacterial Leaf Scorch: A bacterial plant disease of major environmental, economic, and aesthetic importance.

 Beech Bark Disease: A complex affecting American beech (Fagus grandifolia), including both insect and fungal components.

  • Dutch Elm Disease: One of the most destructive shade tree diseases in North America.
  • Emerald Ash Borer: Introduced to North America sometime in the 1990's, it was first reported killing ash trees (genus Fraxinus) in the Detroit, MI, and Windsor, ON, areas in 2002.
  • Gypsy Moth: An important pest of hardwoods in the Northeastern United States since its introduction in 1869.  
  • Hazard Tree: Trees that have defects in roots, trunk, or branches make them likely to fail, perhaps causing personal injury or property damage.
  • Hemlock Woolly Adelgid: First described in western North America in 1924 and first reported in the eastern United States in 1951 near Richmond, VA.
  • Ice Storms: One of nature’s most destructive phenomena.
  • Oak Wilt: One of the most serious tree diseases in the Eastern United States, killing thousands of oaks each year in forests, woodlots, and home landscapes.
  • Sirex Woodwasp: Recent detections of sirex woodwasp outside of port areas in the United States have raised concerns because this insect has the potential to cause significant mortality of pines.
  • Thousand Canker Disease Pest Alert: A tiny bark beetle is creating numerous galleries beneath the bark of affected branches, resulting in fungal infection and canker formation.
